How does your garden grow?

I'm on a voyage of discovery in my first garden.
It's mostly about the veggies at the moment but I'm also discovering lots about flowers and other plants - quite often the hard way and always on a very tight budget.
But this blog is not just about my garden, it's about all the things I see and discover in Sussex and beyond and I would love to hear from you too.

Gardens visit: Sheffield Park

We visited Sheffield Park, near Uckfield, today and, for once, I took my camera.
We endured a bit of rain but the sun came out eventually.
Anyway, here are some photos that, for once, are not taken on my phone...

Gardens Visit: High Beeches

The weather this summer has meant that I have not spent much time visiting gardens – instead I have been occupied with helping my own plot survive the deluge.
I've not been 100% successful.
Although the main rhododendron season is over, there is plenty still to see at HighBeeches so I made a dash around the gardens while there was a break in the clouds.

Majestic cornus

The wild flower meadow is still in full bloom, along with swathes of persicaria, wild orchids and late flowering rhododendrons, magnolias and azaleas.
My highlight of the garden at this time of the year, however, is the majestic cornus kousa tree which is in full bloom and just starting to turn pink at the top. It is visible from right across the garden and, even after all the rain, is still beautiful.

Garden visit: Tilgate Park

Council-owned Tilgate Park in Crawley is an amazing place and it's free. It has a zoo, lakes, walled garden and so much wildlife.
Now is the best time to visit, however, with all the rhododendrons and azaleas out.
I went for a late evening stroll earlier and took these few snaps on my phone before the light faded.

Rhododendron, Magnolia and Camellia show

The two-day Rhododendron, Magnolia and Camellia show opens at Tilgate Park in Crawley this morning.
The show started out in 2002 at Borde Hill but did not take place at all last year.
Major visitor gardens, including Exbury, are represented and experts will be available to offer advice.
Among the things to see is an amazing floral display made up of the seasonal flowers currently on show at nearby High Beeches gardens.

Gardens visit: Borde Hill

While I expect many of the National Trust gardens are full to bursting with visitors over the Easter holiday, privately owned Borde Hill was pleasantly quiet.
Here are some of the photos I took on my visit today.

Gardens visit: High Beeches

A lot of seasonal gardens have reopened this month - High Beeches in Handcross is one.
Here are some photos I took on my visit there this weekend.

Spring has sprung

Here are a few snaps I took this morning when it was misty and damp. A few rhododendrons and daffodils are out. There are plenty of snowdrops too.
